Dmitri Tomkin's excellent score rounds the film out and makes for a bearable watch, given the taxing length and the dry plot. Many critics still give it higher marks than the unofficial remake, 1999's Gladiator starring Russell Crowe (whose director, Ridley Scott, claimed not to have seen Empire).

Last Of The Great Epics

Considering that the actual fall of the Roman Empire DVD took many decades to unfold, the sheer scope of the movie is impressive and admirable. Producer Samuel Bronston was able to take pride in the fact that he had encompassed such a lengthy historical period into a comprehensive plot line, much as he did in the 1961 film El Cid, starring Charleton Heston. No such star, alas, was on hand to rescue Fall of the Roman Empire from box office failure, with Stephen Boyd taking the lead role that Kirk Douglas turned down.

The DVD features the usual commentaries and specials, and the modern viewer is likely to appreciate Empire not just for its obvious grandeur and pageantry, but also for its intense take on the corruption and greed that plummeted much of the world into the Dark Ages. It can be found in the DVD libraries of nearly all serious film buffs.
