The Preakness Stakes, “Get Your Preak On.”

logo

Over the past few decades there has been a declining interest in the “Sport of Kings.” Many factors have contributed to it, such as the sport being a generational thing, in that, it is the betting game that most elderly people grew up with. And now with the explosion of casinos, the betting dollar is spread even thinner. Some tracks(in certain states)have been allowed to have slots and other casino games, thereby giving birth to the “Racino.” Unfortunately for the tracks in Maryland, legislation has not been passed to allow casino games at their tracks; Pimlico and Laurel.

There have even been whispers of Pimlico losing The Preakness Stakes, which is still hugely popular in Maryland and according to Wikipedia, next to the Kentucky Derby, it has the second largest crowd of the year in horse racing. In fact the whole week leading up to the Preakness Stakes energizes the Baltimore area. There are parades, festivals, numerous parties and social gatherings all centering on the big race. There’s even more events to see on Preakness.com.

Come on Back

A large portion of the crowd consists of the people, usually the younger set who are really more interested in partying, that gather in the infield. The infield is the center of the track and here the consumption of alcohol and other shenanigans is legendary. Well in 2009, the Pimlico officials decided they had enough, and severely limited the sale of alcohol and didn’t allow people to bring in their coolers to the infield. And they got their better behaved crowd and…a much smaller one. It dawned on them that the youth that fill up the infield really don’t care who wins the fifth race, they are there to have fun. So they quickly did a 180 and in 2010 introduced the campaign of “Get Your Preak On”. The booze and beer were not only more plentiful, but cheaper, with your souvenir 32 oz. refillable “Get Your Preak On” cup. Yes, never mess with what works, especially in these tough economic times. By all accounts it was a success and a great Baltimore crowd is expected for the Preakness Stakes 2011.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

logo

I bet you have had a lot of dreams in your life – dreams as in aspirations – and dreams as in your sleep; but no matter what your dreams have been, I bet there were never visions of bed bug pictures in your mind as you slept. And you probably didn’t want to wake up with blisters, sores or the psychological effects that may come from the bites of a bed bug. When it comes to bed bugs, there’s just one thought in your mind – how to get rid of them. There are a few ways to go from bed bugs to no bugs in no time.

Make Your Bed Bugs Dead Bugs

Bed bugs, otherwise called cimicidae, feed on humans and other warm-blooded animals and may cause health effects such as rashes, allergic symptoms and even psychological effects. They are attracted to the heat and carbon dioxide of your body. This can be a good thing, though, because it means you can attract them in the same ways by using a device that radiates heat and/or carbon dioxide. An exterminator may be called who can bring one of these devices if you can’t find them somewhere else. Once the bugs are attracted, it’s easier to see where they come from (where they are nesting) as well as catch them and get rid of them. These bugs usually nest in dark areas of furniture that are hard to find, but a dog that has been trained to find these bugs by their scents may also help find them. Once you know where they are, you can choose to get rid of that piece of furniture or just use a pesticide to get rid of them.

Other Ways to Find and Fix Them

Bed bugs also die in temperatures of below negative 26 degrees Fahrenheit, which means it’s also possible to freeze them out. Some sources say they are also repelled by pepper. Other bugs, also, are natural enemies of the bed bug, according to Wikipedia.com, including: cockroaches, ants, spiders, pharaoh’s ant, mites, centipedes and the masked hunter. Of course, you probably won’t want to infest your home with other bugs just to get rid of bed bugs – but, no matter what method you choose, make sure it lets you have a good night, sleep tight – and doesn’t let those bed bugs bite!

You Put Wheel Hub Motors on What?

logo

Finally, a solution to your kids peeling out of the driveway or down the street. The acceleration on the wheel hub motor is a lightning speed of 30 to 40 seconds. The only way you’ll lay rubber that way is if you’re dragging it.

Move It or Lose It Buddy

Don’t be surprised when at full acceleration, the guy behind you starts sitting on his horn. At approximately 30 miles per hour you can climb a hill at a moderate pace, but you will lose approximately 3 to 4 miles per hour in the process. Bigger systems for the wheel hub motors have top speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour. It’s probably fortunate that the top speeds on these motors are as low as they are, at least in the case of one individual; who decided that this would be a good way to make his inline skates work with a lot less effort. He actually succeeded! I don’t do well on skates to begin with, put me on a pair of motorized skates and you can probably just have the ambulance follow me.

1001 Uses

Okay maybe not 1001, but way more than I was thinking when I first heard of these wheel hub motors. In addition to the cars, bicycles, scooters, motorcycles and wheelchairs (oh yes, and inline skates) people are slapping these wheel motors onto just about everything. Case in point, Combat Robots. That’s right, robots-not just any robot mind you, oh no. These are for combat. They go by the names of Cold Arbor, Nuclear Kitten, Uberclocker Remix and Pop Quiz. Other, apparently more peaceful, robots names are Melon Scooter, Snuffles and Make-a-Bot. Robots aren’t the only thing of course, (and those damn skates), that people are putting wheel hub motors on; but they are some of the most utilitarian (not the skates).

From the Berlin Wall to Budapest’s Hot Springs

logo

Taking a trip through the former Communist bloc countries of Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the former East Germany can be a very rewarding experience, offering glimpses of Europe not seen since before World War II. Vacationers who have seen plenty of Western Europe now have the ability to travel freely in parts of the world that were, essentially, closed societies under Communist rule. The Berlin to Budapest tour is an eye-opening experience even for the most seasoned traveler.

Somber Beginning to the Journey

Beginning in Berlin, a city that was first decimated and then divided, tourists can see and feel firsthand the remnants of the Brandenberg Gate, one of the key points in the Berlin Wall and the place where David Hasselhoff would eventually do his victory dance, festooned in a lightbulb-covered jacket. They can also take in the Russian War Memorial and the historic Reichstag building. Even more moving is the Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial.

Hope Springs Anew

On the way to Prague, visitors will enjoy the beauty of Dresden, a city that had to be completely rebuilt after the all-consuming firebombings of the second World War. The new architecture accurately reflects the historic opera house, royal residence and the Zwinger fortress. Once over the Czech border and into Prague, tourists are never disappointed with its castles, cathedrals and bridges, not to mention the charm of the Old Town Square.

The Vienna leg of the trip includes a scenic drive around the historic Ring Road, as well as sightseeing at the State Opera House, the Hapsburg Palaces and St. Stephen's Cathedral. In Budapest, Hungary, similar historic structures await, and also something not found everyplace in Europe: Natural thermal hot springs. Once the sun sets, one can enjoy the restaurants and beer houses of Budapest. The locals don't seem to have any trouble having fun - neither should those whom they consider their guests.

Forget Florida, Seniors are now Living in Tucson

logo

I recently looked at a map of Tucson Arizona and surrounding areas which depicted senior living in Tucson. There was a red dot for every senior housing community and such. There were so many red dots that I could barely make out the word Tucson; and I thought Florida was where all the seniors retired. My father, in his retirement, loved both.

Tucson: it’s Not Just for Scorpions Anymore

With the cost of living in Tucson as reasonable as it is and the availability of real estate or rental in favorable standing, I am hard pressed to find a reason not to live in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson is starting this year’s festivities as early as April with its second annual Festival for Wellness and Lifestyle at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Gunsmoke’s Miss Kitty will be doing a book signing in March and discussing horse rescue. Greyhound racing has been approved for Tucson which will undoubtedly add to the already extensive list of things to do.

Calling all Retirees

As I said earlier, retirement communities in Tucson are springing up all over. I imagine the dry desert heat is quite a change from the dampness (high humidity) found in Florida. Senior retirement communities however, don’t attract all seniors. Real estate price tags in Arizona are incredibly reasonable; so someone retiring to Tucson would not have to give up their life savings to purchase a home in which to live out the rest of their life. Tucson also offers numerous activities for seniors, according to the “Tucson Citizen” (self proclaimed voice of Tucson), ranging from classes to events.

Of course you don’t have to be of retirement age to find a great deal on real estate and enjoy Tucson’s numerous community events. Almost anyone and everyone can find suitable housing and fun things to do. Find a Tucson property management service to get started.

Not Necessarily Pay-to-Play

logo

Football (or, if you're an American, soccer) has always been the sporting pastime of the masses. Unlike some of the major sports, like baseball, hockey or American football, there is no need for exorbitant purchases of equipment to play soccer. All that has ever been needed is a couple of teams, a ball and a field. A netted goal is always nice, but a couple of pylons can serve the same purpose and be just as much fun.

Tournaments for the Masses

Online multi-player soccer games (think Jeu de Foot) offer the same respite from the more expensive tier of sporting events. Many online soccer games, for instance, can be downloaded for free. The masses have responded, with hundreds of thousands of members signing on to kick the ball around, whether they are directing players or making the strategic decisions of a manager. With all of the major clubs represented digitally, fans can take delight in rekindling bitter rivalries, or making new ones out of whole cloth.

Bending It Like Beckham

While some younger players may only take part in Jeu de Foot and other online soccer games for the pure fun of it (going up against Mario, for example), people of various ages are all but consumed by the strategy and, yes, the skill involved. There are plenty of simple versions of such games that will engender some proficiency in the beginner, but Jeu de Foot can go as far as you want it to go. After all, what could be better than bending it like Beckham?

Soccer's popularity has always cut across lines of culture and class, enjoyed everywhere, from the palaces of royalty to the dusty fields of Third World countries. It's societal impact cannot be understated (except in the U.S., it would seem). During the 2010 World Cup, the president of Chile was asked why he was attending the games in South Africa instead of tending to state matters. His response was that, in Chile, soccer is a state matter.

Teaching to the Test

logo

There are few secrets more closely guarded than the actual questions on the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam. There is a constant trickle of news and information on the test questions, as a PMP accreditation is one of the most highly desired feathers in the IT professional's cap. There is only one Project Management Institute, but it would seem there are endless companies who are in the business of "teaching to the test".

Tutorials and Workshops Abound

Such tutorials and practice tests are useful, to be sure, but one should not shy away from the heavy lifting that is required to get through this 200-question exam. Reading the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) is hard enough. Understanding it may take more than a couple of reads-through, as it is raw text without much in the way of examples. The PMP Handbook is another resource of the "need to know" variety. There are plenty of audio workshops available, but a PMP candidate would do well to find the ones whose completion will count toward the 35 required educational contact hours.

Study Hard

While there is no way to know what will comprise a passing grade on the PMP certification exam (another closely-guarded secret), experts believe that someone who is correctly answering about four-fifths of the simulated exam questions has a decent chance of passing the PMP exam qestions. As with tests of any other sort, study habits are important, and so is one's state of mind at the time the actual test is taken. Being well rested can go a long way all by itself.

If you should fail the exam, you'll have two more chances to take it again within a year. Three failing grades, according to PMI, renders you ineligible to retake the test for a period of one year past the date of the last failure. It is the IT world's equivalent to the Bar exam for attorneys. It can be nerve-wracking, time consuming, draining, and ultimately one of the most rewarding accomplishments one can ever achieve.

The Top 10 Korean Movies

logo

I have to admit to receiving a little bit of help on this from a number of Korean movie aficionados.

Five Good but Apparently Not Great Korean Movies

Coming in at a respectable numbers 10 through 6 are:
  • Bin Jip (Empty House)-a homeless man breaks into other people’s houses for no other reason than to find temporary shelter. While there he repays them by doing simple repairs. All of this changes when he enters the home of a woman in an abusive relationship.
  • Sassy Girl-an unpredictable comedy with great acting and lots of laughs.
  • Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance-contains some rather weird, twisted scenes which some may find disturbing; thing is, the director warns you about it right up front.
  • The Way Home-heartwarming and at times gut wrenching story about a grandmother’s love for her grandson.
  • Welcome to Dongmakgol-you will laugh and you will cry during this story of soldiers and their experiences in the village of Dongmakgol. The cinematography in this film is awe inspiring.

Now For the Best Of the Best

The finest of the fine, numbers 5 through 1 are:
  • Joint Security Area-a deep tragedy about the struggles between north and south.
  • Old boy-another disturbing but brilliant psychological thriller.
  • Shiri-this just happens to be the oldest film in this article. This block buster again explores the trials and tribulations between north and south and entangles it with a love story.
  • Friend-this movie follows four friends from childhood to adulthood, demonstrating that no matter what choices you make in life; friendship, devotion and loyalty play a significant role.
  • Taekukgi: The Brotherhood of War-two brothers are forced into service during the Korean War. The story of the war itself is rather devastating but the plight of the two brothers, their family and a nation makes this a must see.
So there you have it. With any luck at all you’ll be able to read the subtitles quickly enough to follow the movies.

Costs for Promotional Umbrellas

logo

If a company is planning a golf tournament, a picnic, a charity event and they’re trying to find that perfect gift that not only benefit’s the recipient, but them as well, and is inexpensive, there isn’t a much better item than the promotional umbrella.

Standard Umbrellas

Perhaps the most common umbrella, at least in the promotional world, is the golf umbrella; rare is the golf bag that doesn’t have one attached to it. Now with promotional umbrella, the purchaser is buying in bulk. Most promotional umbrella companies have break downs of 50, 100,250,500, 1000.and other. Obviously the more purchased, the more saved. Typically, a decent golf umbrella, runs about thirty bucks. That’s for fifty, if you bump it up to a thousand they’ll knock off roughly thirty percent. This includes your company’s logo on one panel.

The stick umbrella, a non-folding umbrella with a straight handle is your classic umbrella. It’s almost much cheaper than a golf umbrella. Expect to pay around eight to ten bucks for a hundred. The mini umbrella is a small umbrella that fits into a bag or brief case. Sometimes they come with their own fancy container. For fifty expect to pay around twenty bucks. However with the mini, which is a very popular umbrella, don’t expect much of a price break even if you order up to a thousand. The beach umbrella is also a very popular umbrella and if you spend a lot of time near the water, you really can’t do without one. They are large, with a 72” arc, and can shade a couple of people comfortably. And they’re about the same price as a promotional golf umbrella.

There are also patio umbrellas(the most expensive) kid’s, vented, bubble and folding. Search around the many web-sites for the best deals.
