Now that you have completed your degree and you already have another degree you should feel very accomplished everything that you have been able to achieve over the past few years.

A top US legal watchdog has predicted that almost 190 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win this November’s presidential election will come from states with new restrictive and controversial voting laws.
A nationwide slew of tightened voter registration rules and identity laws will, according to The Brennan Centre for Justice at NYU’s School of Law, threaten the democratic process by keeping voter numbers down. House Bill 1355 — the boulder which started the avalanche — was passed by Florida law makers last year and, among other things, requires non-partisan volunteers registering voters to themselves register.
Divided
Not surprisingly, the parties have lined up on either side of the fence. Republican law makers, who supported the bill, claim the new rules — which puts a reduced “shelf life” on signatures and new restrictions on voters changing their registered address — would reduce voter fraud. The Democrats allege the changes are designed to suppress voter registration among the young and poor minority group; the party’s traditional power-base.
So who’s right? Would a public role of voter registration members, as the League of Women Voters claim, threaten individuals not with only fines but put them in personal danger. In Florida at least the pundits, like the politicians, are equally divided. Daniel Smith, a University of Florida political scientist, claims the drop in new voter registration is “a direct result of these laws changes”. While University of Tampa professor, Scott Paine, firmly believes “the young are now a mixed bag, neither Democrat or Republican as they were four or eight years ago”.
Election Threat
Thirteen other states have passed, or are on the verge of passing voting laws that will have an impact on this autumn’s presidential election. Three more have passed restrictive laws that do not come into effect until 2013. Others, including Arizona, have ordered a law firm to examine the implications more closely.
Meanwhile, The Brennan Centre is convinced a drop in voter foot-fall will impact on the election outcome. “These laws represent the most significant cutback in voting rights in decades,” said its Democracy Program director, Wendy Weiser.
